Cinco de Noviembre - Negros Island Freedom

November 5 is the day of independence for the people of Negros Island. It was on that day where the Spanish army officially surrendered with a written document to the revolutionaries of Negros lead by General Lacson of the northern Negros and General Araneta from the Southern part of the island.

On Nov. 5, 1898, revolutionaries led by Gen, Juan Araneta from Bago City and Gen. Aniceto Lacson from Silay City carrying fake rifles fashioned from nipa stalks and cannons from rolled bamboo mats (amakan) painted black, deceived the Spanish colonizers into surrendering. 

In 1989, then President Corazon Aquino declared November 5 a special non-working holiday in Negros Occidental.
